I presently have a mini laptop utilizing an Intel Atom processor with 2 gigs of ram. I am using Ubuntu 14 and find it usable as the families common mini laptop. I have a Pent 4, 2. I do use it for video transfer to dvd. Music capture for mixing my own music. It would be good for kids or grandma to learn on. Might not take win7 because of low ram. You can donate it to a school, some will still take them.
And yes, Ubuntu Linux will work on it for sure. Place large hard drive in it, and share it to your network. Hank, As I stated above. It has tools built in which make life a LOT easier for newbies, but is also well worth keeping around long after those tools are no longer needed because you have learned a lot. There is tons of community support for it as well. It supports package installs such as RPM flawlessly, but you can also compile files easily if need be. Have you even tested the newer Ubuntu releases? Ubuntu is a playground for Debian to test new semi stable programs etc. Each version is very different and you cannot count on it remaining stable from one build to the next.
Nothing wrong with that as long as you understand Ubuntu is not a distro to deploy where reliability is required. I agree CentOS is very stable! It however is NOT overly friendly to newbs. OpenSuSe has somehow remained very very stable, and has also remained very friendly to learn on at the same time, a true rarity.

I have both a Ubuntu build at home and also a SuSE build, and there has been no difference in terms of stability, even if there has been more changes in applications on the Ubuntu side.
