How much horse can i afford

I think it would be really interesting to have data compiled on horse ownership expenses nationally - like a clickable map where you can see things like expected farrier expenses for your area, and compare that to other areas. Also it would be interesting to see horse expenses relative to cost of living.

That would be a really valuable tool for this kind of calculator, especially for people who may want to factor that into their decisions about where to live.

Horse world is contracting. There must be data on that. Important to think about. If you event, well the cost is significantly more than if you trail ride. I can keep 10 horses on my own farm, feed them with hay we grow ourselves and the only costs i have are pretty much farrier and an occasional vet call….

The more trained a horse is, the more expensive they are. Since the type of horse and reason for purchase varies so much, the cost is also just as broad. The cost can range from a couple of hundred dollars to several thousands of dollars. Ask the boarding facility if they have access to bedding, should your horse need it. You may be eligible for a tax break if you own the land that your horse grazes on, or there may be a tax break available because your horse can be categorized as a pet.

This is a great tool. I have a nice man who boards her for me and feeds her well, while I buy and administer vaccinations an do her farrier work. Happy Trails! BUt each of them is well worth it. I thought I spent the bare min!

I do not pay for training or lessons, which took a big chunk for some years. NOT useful at all for someone who has never owned a horse!!!!! After having and raising my kids, and aging of course, now I have to deal with trying to find things in womens plus sizes-seems like the horse world still discriminates according to size, in spite of the fact that most of us are getting larger, according to what you hear!

I have been riding for nearly 50 years, and have owned and trained horses for nearly I have competed in everything from hunters, jumpers, eventing and I now concentrate on dressage. You could spend endless amounts of money on them. Was hoping to see something that laid out expenses, so can make good decision on how much I can anticipate spending on a boarded horse for my 14 year old daughter. Not helpful for someone that new to the equine world and trying to educate themselves to the costs before owning a horse.
