Pay it willingly with a thankful heart. Pay it first, even when you think you do not have enough money to meet your other needs. Doing so will help you develop greater faith, overcome selfishness, and be more receptive to the Spirit. Each year, schedule a time for tithing settlement with your bishop. After studying the above resources and following the inspiration of the Spirit, you may select one or more of the activities below to help class members understand the doctrine.
Ask the young women to search Malachi —10 and Doctrine and Covenants and share the promises made to tithe payers. Hand out tithing receipts, and let the young women explain to each other how to use them. Share how you have been blessed for paying tithing. Ask the young women to write what they find in the appropriate column on the board. Invite a few of them to share their testimonies of the law of tithing. Though actual money was often scarce, early members donated garden produce, livestock or even time to the tithing house, which often provided necessities for the poor and needy members of the community.
In addition to tithing, most faithful members donate fast offerings, which consist of at least the money saved by fasting for two meals each month.
Church President Thomas S. Supplies are dedicated to feeding, clothing and housing the needy, while more than 10, welfare and humanitarian missionaries volunteer their time and money to administer this aid every day. During times of disaster, Church facilities such as Church buildings are used as places of refuge, and local Church members assist humanitarian missionaries and the more than 50, proselytizing missionaries in providing immediate relief.
