Also you will have a chimney breast either inside the room or on the outside wall for the fire to fit into. The diameter of the flue is a minimum of 7" mm or greater. The brick built chimney or a 7" flue liner is also known as Class 1. Pre-fabricated flues are suitable for most gas fires and gas stoves. Prefabricated flues offer a good depth so you can also choose from the majority of full depth fires and all slimline fires.
Pre- fabricated flues are found either in older houses where the existing Chimney has been lined by a steel flue or a newer house with a steel flue built in and is recognised by a metal flue and terminal on the roof. The diameter of the flue is a minimum of 5" mm. Some older houses where the brick chimney is unsafe will be lined with a 5" mm flue. A pre fabricated flue with a minimum diameter of 5" mm is also know as Class 2. Pre-cast flues are found in most modern homes and suitable for a wide range of slimline gas fires.
Power flues are older, less-efficient systems and we do recommend an upgrade to a balanced flue system, which is draftless and offers a greater and more efficient heat output. Please note that this information on chimney and flues is provided as a guide only, and we recommend a professional fireplace survey before purchase and installation.
What type of chimney or flue do I have? Pre-cast Flue Class 2 Many modern homes are installed with pre-cast flues, which you can identify by a raised ridge terminal on your roof, made from brick, metal or stone.
Balanced Flue. No chimney required. You can have electric, gas and gel fires with a prefabricated flue. Take a look at our class 2 gas fires. What is a pre-cast flue? They are a more common feature in new houses and can be recognised by a small ridge vent on the roof.
Due to being much shallower than traditional chimneys and prefabricated flues, pre-cast flues are only compatible with class 2 fires. For example…. They do have a few fitting requirements, however. The room should also be around cubic metres. See all of our flueless gas fires. They need to be installed in a room with an external wall and use two pipes — one to extract fumes away from the fire, and one to draw in fresh air for combustion purposes.
Powerflue gas fires extract fumes through the aid of a fan. A pipe leads from the fire which has a fan at the end — this means that in most cases they will need to be installed in a room with an external wall. See all of our balanced flue and Powerflue gas fires.
